  • Customer Collaboration Over Contract Negotiation
  • Responding to Change Over Following a Plan.

Scrum is a framework within Agile, and, like all other Agile frameworks, the Agile manifesto is the foundation of Scrum. All principles within Scrum are derived from the Agile manifesto and enhanced to bring a working understanding.

Certified Scrum Master’s role is to –

  • Motivate the team to follow Scrum.
  • Remove impediments
  • Create an environment of trust and transparency
  • Ensure that Scrum values and principles are followed
  • Coordinates between Scrum team, product owner and other stakeholders
  • Act as a servant leader within the team.

Here is the list of distinct roles in a Scrum team

Scrum Master Motivates the team and ensures that Scrum is followed
Scrum Product Owner Owns the product backlog and ensures that the items are prioritized and the team is following the product backlog
Development team Picks up backlog items in the sprint and collaborates to deliver on time.
Other stakeholders Include customer representatives, Senior management and external stakeholders who can give feedback on shippable items.

A Scrum Master’s role differs from the project manager’s. There is no project manager role in a Scrum team. Here is a comparison between Scrum Master and Project Manager roles:

Project Manager Scrum Master
Project Manager is a command-and-control role. Scrum Master is a servant leader.
Project Manager allocates the work and maintains the WBS, timesheet and other records Scrum Master does not allocate the work. The team picks up the task as defined in a sprint. Scrum Master works to remove impediments.
Project Manager is accountable for the outcome of a project Team is accountable for the final account; the Scrum Master alone is not responsible for the delivery of software
Project Manager controls the team and ensures that people are working on designated tasks Scrum Master does not have any control. He/she only ensures an optimal environment. Scrum Masters ensure transparency and smooth communication.

The quality of the delivery is owned by the entire Scrum team. No one person handles quality. The product owner decides the product backlog and the priority after discussion with various stakeholders.

The product backlog in Scrum is owned by the Product Owner.

The ideal size of the Scrum team is defined as 9. It varies according to the organization. A large team defeats the very purpose of Scrum.

Scrum has defined three roles: Scrum Master, Product Owner, and Scrum team members.

The six principles of Scrum are:

  • Empirical Process Control
  • Self-organization
  • Collaboration
  • Value-Based Prioritization
  • Time-boxing
  • Iterative Development

Scrum Master works relentlessly to promote transparency in Scrum. The team’s work is made visible, people discuss their progress and issues daily, and the stakeholders and customers review the work after ‌each sprint.
